Immediate impact of exercise on arterial stiffness in humans

چکیده
Background and objectives: Increased arterial stiffness is an accepted cardiovascular risk factor. Several studies have shown that regular exercise is associated with reduced arterial stiffness. However, the acute effect is not well known. The aim of this study was to evaluate the immediate impact of exercise on arterial stiffness measured by pulse wave velocity (PWV). Subjects and Methods: Data from 100 consecutive patients who underwent graded maximal aerobic exercise test and pulse wave velocity study due to chest pain were analyzed. Results: With respect to brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV), it decreased after the exercise test (before vs. after; 1420 ± 260 vs 1358 ± 245, 1428 ± 255, vs 1360 ± 239 cm/sec; left and right, respectively). Upper extremity systolic blood pressure did not change from baseline. However, upper extremity diastolic blood pressure increased slightly. In addition, lower extremity blood pressure decreased in both systolic and diastolic phases. In both normotensives and hypertensives, baPWV decreased after exercise test. Conclusion: Exercise immediately decreases arterial stiffness.

Association of Arterial Stiffness Following Glucose Uptake and Exercise with Baseline Vitamin D Levels in Inactive Men and Women
vitamin D deficiency is associated with many cardiovascular disorders. Arterial stiffness responses also depend on nutritional and exercise. Therefore, the study aimed to investigate the relationship between arterial stiffness response after glucose uptake and exercise with baseline levels of vitamin D in inactive men and women. The present study was an analysis correlation study, and the subj...

Arterial stiffness increases with ageing and hypertension. Regular physical activity has been recommended as an important management component of hypertension. The purpose of this study was to examine the acute impact of maximal dynamic exercise and the effect of 20 weeks of aerobic exercise on arterial stiffness of the carotid and brachial arteries in older hypertensives. Nine previously seden...
متن کاملImpact of an exercise program on arterial stiffness and insulin resistance in hemodialysis patients.
Cardiovascular disease remains the primary cause of mortality in patients who are maintained on hemodialysis. Arterial stiffness and insulin resistance are independent risk factors for cardiovascular mortality in this population. In healthy individuals, higher physical conditioning is associated with reduced arterial stiffness. Exercise reduces insulin resistance and glucose intolerance in sede...
متن کاملPresentation of a Non-invasive Method of Estimating Arterial Stiffness by Modeling Blood Flow and Arterial Wall Based on the Determination of Elastic Module of Arterial Wall
Introduction: Arterial stiffness is an important predictor of cardiovascular risk. Several indices have been introduced to estimate the arterial stiffness based on the changes in the brachial blood pressure. Since the substitution of the blood pressure changes in the central arteries such as carotid with the blood pressure changes in the brachial results in error in the blood...
